How and how to flush a cat’s eyes?

Cats are incredibly neat pets, but they need help from the owner to maintain a flawless appearance. In our article we will tell you how to wipe the eyes of a cat and what means to use for this.

A healthy cat always has clean eyes. The appearance of abundant purulent discharge or tearing is a bell for an attentive owner: rather, the pet should be taken to the veterinarian! This may be a symptom of an infectious disease, allergy, or eye injury. The exact cause will be determined by a specialist.

However, a small amount of discharge from the eyes, which appear rarely and do not bother the pet, is an absolutely normal situation. They can arise due to the special structure of the muzzle (like Persian cats), unbalanced diet or banal dust getting into the eye … There are many reasons, and most often the cat removes impurities by herself, carefully washing her paw.

But cats also have their own sloths, and concern for the cleanliness of the pet’s face can lie on the owner’s shoulders. So how to wash your cat’s eyes at home and how to do it right?

You will need a cotton swab (or cloth) and a cleanser: saline, chlorhexidine or a special lotion (Clean Eye from ISB) – to choose from. Saline solution will simply remove the impurities from the eyelids, and chlorhexidine and lotion will not only clean, but also provide an antibacterial effect and relieve irritation.

Before processing the eyes, room temperature liquid is applied to a special napkin or cotton swab. The eye is rubbed in the direction from the outer corner of the eyelid to the inner. This is an important rule, the non-observance of which nullifies all efforts. If you wipe the eye on the contrary – from the inner corner to the outer – all the dirt will go into the bag under the eyelid and accumulate there, causing even more inflammation.
