How to wash cats?
It would seem easy to bathe a cat. But when you get down to business, a number of questions pop up. For example, what temperature should water be, what means is better to use for bathing, to wash a pet in the bathroom, or to use a basin? And is it even possible to bathe cats? About this and much more in our article.
Washing cats: is it necessary and how often?
Cats around the world are known for their cleanliness. But even if the pet never leaves the apartment, harmful bacteria and germs that are spreading through the air, daily settle on his fur coat. When licking, they enter the cat’s digestive tract and, as they accumulate, undermine the immune system and lead to chronic diseases.
To prevent this from happening, from time to time a cat coat needs to arrange a “general cleaning”, in other words, bathing days. But how often?
In this matter, it all depends on a number of factors: the breed’s features, the cat’s condition and well-being, its lifestyle (whether your pet is walking on the street or not). Representatives of some breeds are recommended to bathe more often (for example, sphinxes), others (for example, Persians) are better not to wash without need.
If your pet is walking outside, the frequency of his bathing will directly depend on the degree of pollution. In general, “revelers” are recommended to bathe at least 1 time per month.
Pets, not leaving the apartment, it is advisable to bathe 1 time in 3-6 months. More often than not, because it leads to dry skin and a deterioration in the quality of the coat.
Important: it is strongly not recommended to bathe sick and weak pets. The same applies to animals under stress or quarantined (after vaccination, illness, etc.).
How to wash a cat?
Washing cats involves the use of special products. Removing dirt and excess sebum only with the help of water will not work, and human shampoos, conditioners and soap are not suitable for bathing a pet at pH level.
If you wash your cat with such products, the condition of its skin and coat will deteriorate. In most cases, it is the wrong remedies that cause dandruff and dermatitis.
Therefore, to wash a pet, it is better to use exclusively high-quality products designed specifically for cats (for example, Iv San Bernard, Bio-Groom, Oster, 8 in 1). Such funds are designed taking into account the peculiarities of feline skin and coat. They delicately remove all impurities, while not drying the skin, but, on the contrary, nourish it with useful elements.
Today in pet stores there is a huge assortment of shampoos and conditioners for cats, taking into account the characteristics of their coat. Before buying funds, carefully read the purpose and do not forget to follow the recommendations for use.
Preparation for washing
Before proceeding to washing, you need to prepare for it. Make sure that the cat does not eat before bathing. It is better if 4 hours pass from the last meal to the bath procedures.
The optimum temperature in the room where you will wash the cat is not lower than +22 ° C.
Suitable water temperature: + 33–35 ° C.
To bathe a cat you will need:
special shampoo for cats (and, if necessary, conditioner),
Why are cats better to wash in a basin than in a bath? Firstly, this way you reduce the risk of injury. Many cats try to escape from the bath while bathing and are injured on its side. Washing in the basin eliminates the possibility of such injuries. In addition, cats are psychologically calmer in the basin.
If you still plan to bathe in the bath, be sure to put a towel on the bottom so that the pet does not slip.
How to wash cats in all respects? We study in stages.
We fill the basin (or bath) with water. Water level – to the pet’s chest.
Gently place the cat in a basin (bath).
Gently wet the coat. We make sure that water does not get into the eyes, ears and mouth.
We apply a special shampoo on the wool. A small amount is enough, otherwise it is difficult to wash it off. Thoroughly wash the cat’s paws, tail, torso and neck – always in the direction of hair growth. Do not affect the area of the ears and muzzle.
Contamination from the muzzle is desirable to remove locally, without soaping the head completely. To wash off the dust, wipe it with a slightly damp sponge or hand. If you also use conditioner in addition to shampoo, follow the recommendations for use.
Rinse the coat thoroughly.
After washing, be sure to dry the cat so that it does not catch a cold. If possible, wrap it in a towel and hold it on your hands for about 10 minutes. So you not only help her dry, but also relieve the stress received during bathing.
If the cat is not very afraid of noise, you can use a hairdryer. We make sure that there is no draft in the room where the pet will dry. Otherwise, colds cannot be avoided.
These simple rules will help make water procedures effective and safe. Take a note and try!
